HMTX Industries Introduces New Flooring Category at NEOCON

Transforming waste plastic bottles into innovative, responsible flooring

NORWALK, CT — HMTX Industries will debut an innovative flooring product concept during NeoCon: SRPä rigid core flooring, an alchemy of responsible beauty that will transform waste plastic bottles into innovative, responsible flooring. Two plastic bottles* (PET) are upcycled into each square foot of SRP flooring, with a cross-linked polyurethane top layer, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) core layer, and a cross-linked polyurethane foam back layer. Ultimately the product will be transformed to an engineered thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) which will be the foundation of a single polymer construction. This will give HMTX the ability to recycle each plank into new planks and making it a circular product.

SRPTM uses approximately 2 standard 16.8 oz plastic waste bottles per square foot.

HMTX collaborated with Huntsman, a global manufacturer of differentiated chemicals and global leader in MDI-based polyurethanes, to create this groundbreaking solution in the flooring industry. Together with innovative chemistry, HMTX and Huntsman help alleviate the challenge of single-use plastics by integrating end-of-life plastic bottles into a fully recyclable, environmentally conscious solution.

“Plastic waste poses a major environmental challenge to our planet,” said Harlan Stone, CEO of HMTX Industries. “Globally less than 10% of all plastic is currently recycled. Landfilling is not the solution and can present its own problems for our future. We are designing products to be recycled and kept in circulation, so that they don’t end up in the landfill. Together with Huntsman, we are contributing to the solution by capturing and transforming single-use plastics into productive, everyday products for home or business.”

He continued, “What if with every step you take, two waste plastic bottles were upcycled into something useful, helpful, and circular – meaning the bottles would always be in use, never purposefully disposed? With SRP, the floor you’re walking on is more than just a floor. Every step you take makes a difference.”

HMTX will pursue multiple third-party certifications for SRP such as Declare labels, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Healthcare Product Declarations (HPDs), and FloorScore. The product is intended to enter the marketplace in 2024.
